Being Present
By Sofia Tedesco
As a college student, living for the weekend can turn into a harsh mindset that will not set us up for success. The weekend cannot be the only thing you think about from the beginning of your week. Friday nights are long awaited (and always well-deserved) because of those countless hours spent studying and working. However, while we are allowed to look forward to these days, constantly reminding ourselves that “It’s almost Friday” could contribute to an imbalance in our lives - causing us to not be present.
I am not saying to not look forward to the weekend, but making it a habit to only look forward to those two days is a problem. The issue with this is that many people do not appreciate where they are at that moment. I find that practicing mindfulness helps the “busy college student” in their journey to find fulfillment throughout their four years.
Becoming aware of your thoughts and feelings while accepting them can be a therapeutic experience (which can take up one minute of your day)
You are allowed to want the weekend to come faster - but only living for the weekends deprives you of other experiences you might be missing in the meantime. To help with this, look forward to the small things in your day - whether it is breakfast with a friend or going to the gym, those small “I’m looking forward to…” experiences are what keep us motivated and not itching for the weekend.
So, how will you be present this week?
