Taylor Swift Has Entered a New Era… and So Have We
When the clock struck 12 on October 21st, we officially entered Taylor Swift’s newest era: Midnights. As fans of Taylor Swift know, a new album is not only a collection of new songs, but rather a shift in sound, mood, and best of all, fashion. As current college students, we’ve grown up with Taylor through many of these eras. When I think of Red, I am transported to polkadots, peplum, and, namely, an endless array of reds. Any song off of Reputation makes me want to break out leather, snakeskin, and not an ounce of color. Hence when her newest album was announced, I was immediately eager to see which style she has taken on, and how we may see it popularized on campus.
Since Midnights was announced, Taylor has been spotted in glamorous looks featured in navy and silver tones, reminiscent of the night sky. The era was kickstarted in a bedazzled halter Oscar De La Renta minidress to announce the album. Her afterparty look emphasized the album title, showcasing glittering stars on a navy dress. However, since the initial release, many of her looks have resembled that of the 70s. This interesting combination plays out in a variety of styles throughout her new music videos, promotional shoots, and streetwear looks.
Here is how I think some of Taylor’s current looks will become staples in our own Midnights eras.
“SO SCARLET IT WAS MAROON'': These lyrics from the second track do not just pertain to the mysterious romance Taylor sings about. Recently, Taylor’s palette has been filled with dark jewel tones like navy and maroon. She’s also sported many colors we typically see in the fall, like burnt oranges and browns. I predict our own Midnights eras taking on these dark tones, both in comfy sweaters for class, or a top to go out. These colors radiate glamor and confidence, making you ready to take on whatever the day brings you.
MORE PRINTS, MORE FUN: Taylor has been taking prints to a new level lately. In the “Anti-Hero” music video, she wears a variety of striped sweaters. Stripes continued to be popular in her promotional photos and videos on TikTok, and she has also sported houndstooth and plaid. The variety of prints gives off a very retro 70s vibe, which in conjunction with modern trends, can add a different vibe to everyday fall fits.
FLARE, FLARE, FLARE: Taylor has also shown off looks with highwaisted, flare pants, many of which being corduroy. The past few years, flare has been everywhere. Most notably, flare leggings have become a staple in my (and almost every Fairfield students’) wardrobe. I only see this trend gaining traction in our Midnights eras. Joggers have been replaced by flare sweats and the Aerie crossovers sure aren’t going anywhere soon.
DON’T BE AFRAID TO SHINE: As Taylor sings in the track “Bejeweled”, “when I walk in the room, I can still make the whole place shimmer.” This season, don’t be afraid to experiment with sparkle - especially for a night out! While a statement top or skirt can be a look to remember, this can also manifest in the details. The right jewelry can take a look from basic to memorable.
While some of the trends Taylor has been taking on will certainly be gaining popularity this season, the real importance of the Midnights era is confidence. As she sings in this album, “they say looks can kill, and I might try.” Find your look that makes you feel best and take on this era in the best way you know how!
