From Blah to Blast: Tips for Spontaneous Fun in Fairfield!
Written By: Charlotte Powell
Though we all love Fairfield, like at any other college, it’s easy to feel cooped up in your living spaces and that you do the same things every weekend. The weather here isn’t the most forgiving either, sometimes limiting our darties, beach days/walks, Post Road or Westport shopping, outdoor dinners/brunches, etc. So what can you do to switch things up? With finals week and reading days approaching, you may need a fun activity or two to maximize your time here at the end of the school year. I’ve compiled a quick list of more niche things to do for when you’re bored at Fairfield U. Grab your friends and roommates to try some of these ideas!
Hibachi Night (Akita)
Going out to dinner and chatting is fun and all but what could be more entertaining than Hibachi? A few seniors have done this at their beach houses where they’ve hired a personal hibachi chef, which is also a great way to do it. Akita Japanese Steakhouse is a favorite amongst myself and my friends, and a popular tradition amongst many friend groups I hear! It’s only a quick 7 minute drive away (off of Blackrock Turnpike and Kings Highway) and the food and cocktails are genuinely really good. The staff is so fun and they love college kids! I think going with a bigger group where you can all gather around the hibachi grill table and take shots of sake given to you by the hibachi chef is the way to go. I love when they light the food on fire or when they toss the food to you and you try and catch it in your mouth. You can dress up and put on cute outfits or go cozy and casual with sweats. Every time I’ve done a hibachi night here at Fairfield, it has always been a fun and laughter-filled experience. Maybe you haven’t heard of Akita or hibachi at all, or maybe this reminded you, but it’s such a great option for a fun outing when you and your friends need something new!
PowerPoint Night
This is such a fun activity that I stole off of Tik Tok. You gather your friends together and each prepare a fun PowerPoint or Google Slides to present on the topic of your choosing. I really like the ones that incorporate your friend groups into them like ‘Ranking Who Would Survive the Zombie Apocalypse and Why’ or ‘Which Rom Com Character Everyone Is.’ I’ve also seen ones about random passions and theories where each person shares theirs. ‘Semester Recaps’ are always good ones that will bring about a lot of memories and laughs. Powerpoint night is a fun chill activity that you can do while sipping wine and munching on snacks, once again providing a new and different activity to kill the boredom!
Themed Cocktail/Board Night
Also stolen from Tik Tok, these are such fun activities that allow you to get creative and make something yummy. Themed Cocktail Night is where you and your friends collectively decide on a theme and then each person makes a batch of cocktails out of it to share with the group. For example, you can have ‘Cocktail Based on Your Major’, ‘Cocktail Based on Your Ideal Type,’ etc. My friends and I have done nights where we shared our specialty and signature cocktails we love to make, like my roommate’s famous Lemon Drop Shots (shoutout Maeve!). Similar to Themed Cocktail Night, you could do Board Night or Dip Night which is essentially the same idea but with a board spread or dip instead of cocktails. This could be like a ‘Cookie Board,’‘Cheese Only Board,’‘Cannoli Dip’ or ‘Buffalo Chicken Dip’ – essentially a potluck if you will. Pinterest and Tik Tok are great sources of inspiration for this.
Cards and Board Games:
Don’t let the name throw you off—board games will not always make you bored. Grab a good number of friends and play some rounds of Code Names, Catchphrase, Blank Slate, For the Girls, Cards Against Humanity, etc. Things can get competitive too which is always fun.
Raquetball
I don’t know if you know this or not, but the Recplex on campus actually has racquetball or squash rooms that you can go into whenever! Grab some paddles from the Recplex front desk and go with your friends. Even if you don’t know how to play, it’s really fun sometimes to just get your anger and silly frustration out by hitting a ball against the wall. It’ll bring some good laughs and friendly competition!
